Twelfth Night's Storm

I saw "Twelfth Night" a few weeks ago performed by The Rude Mechanicals, a Shakespearean troupe that often performs amid summer in Tuscaloosa, Alabama.

The play starts with a shipwreaked crew, i.e., the captain and a lady named Viola who had been separated from her twin brother Sebastian. (Ha! My first name!) I do not now if the play calls for a storm to cause the shipwreck, or if the original play simply starts after the shipwreck.

At any rate the opening special effects performed in this rendition were very well done: complete with computer controlled laser or led lights simulating lightning, fog machine and musicians performing "avant-garde" music to simulate the storm itself. Even the troupe tried to band themselves together, bracing themselves, but the storm itself tossed them about, very well-done.

PATCH NOTES: "Could I synthesize a storm?" That was the quest for this patch. The machine, which I now call Spaghettiman, simply amazes me. Noise, filtration, frequency modulation, resonator and granular synthesis come together to form a soundscape that I never believed possible, especially with Spaghettiman set-up for quantized western music.

While watching the play I kept seeing it in a space/sci-fi version, probably in the same universe as Space Balls. Instead of a shipwreck on a island, they shipwreck on a planet. Either way the soundscape works fairly well.
