PATCH NOTES:
Giant Steps by John Coltrane is considered by many the most feared tune in jazz. It is also one of the most influential jazz albums of all time. The rapid transition between the keys of B, G and E-flat major makes improvisation over these chord changes difficult. In short the tune doesn't function. Specifically, it's quite disjunct compared to the step-wise motion prominently preferred in most western forms and structures in art music.

My quest: Can a modular synthesizer play "Giant Steps"? Well, sort of. I cannot play the melody as my sequencers can only play 5 notes. I cannot play the entire chord structure because my sequencers only have 16 steps. I would need a sequencer as wide as a barn to play the entire tune.

What can I do? I can easily offset the frequency from one sequencer to play the keys of B, G, and E-flat. I can synthesize a bass and solo voice to improvise over those tonal centers via beat dividers and mixing random control voltages through a quantizer. The result is the patch you're about to hear, "A Few Steps More."

My teacher Jonathan Noffsinger first told me that we all have choices. This is the first and most profound lesson I learned from him. Choices may be limited, but you can move forward, even if only by a "Few Steps More."
