Lambda Phase (BPl)

about

The Bohlen-Pierce scale has been quite fascinating to me for a long time. Just imagine a couple or three microwave engineers who loved music, discovered a totally new scale independently of each other by using different means. This scale was first described in the 1970s, but it was not published until the 1980s.

As stated in previous tracks, the Western equal-tempered scale divides an octave into to 12 "equal" steps. The Bohlen-Pierce (B-P) scale divides a 12th into 13 equal steps. There is no octave equivalent. The interval of equivalence is the 12th--an octave and a fifth. Leave it to microwave engineers to disrupt 450 years of music training. So long freshman dictation class! Jamey Aebersold, it's time to re-write the "Red Book!"

The scale, rather mode, used here is the lambda scale or lambda mode with in the Bohlen-Pierce scale/system. It has foreign, yet familiar sound. It's quite bluesy. In many ways sounds more even than the Western blues scale. Since blues/jazz was derived from African and European roots, the western scale we here today, even the blues scale often sounds bland, uninteresting. However, when you hear notes that fit naturally where they could not be played on a piano, you ear warms to it, understanding that there is far more to explore.
